ACH & Wire Transfer Guide
JPMorgan Access supports a wide range of payment types, allowing treasury professionals to initiate, approve, and track domestic and international payments through a single platform. This guide covers the primary payment methods available — ACH transfers and wire transfers — along with tools like Bank Lookup, Branch Lookup, and Global ACH that streamline the payment process.
ACH Transfers
ACH (Automated Clearing House) transfers are electronic payments processed through the ACH network. They are commonly used for vendor payments, payroll, tax payments, and other recurring or non-urgent transactions. JPMorgan Access supports several ACH payment types:
| ACH Type | Code | Use Case | Settlement |
|---|---|---|---|
| CCD — Corporate Credit/Debit | CCD | B2B payments between companies | 1-2 business days |
| CTX — Corporate Trade Exchange | CTX | B2B with remittance data (multiple addenda) | 1-2 business days |
| PPD — Prearranged Payment & Deposit | PPD | Payroll, consumer payments | 1-2 business days |
| WEB — Internet-initiated | WEB | Online consumer payments | 1-2 business days |
| TEL — Telephone-initiated | TEL | Phone-authorized payments | 1-2 business days |
ACH Processing Details
- Same-day ACH: Available for eligible transactions with earlier cut-off times
- Nacha compliance: All ACH payments adhere to Nacha formatting and security rules
- Addenda records: Remittance information can be attached for reconciliation
- Pre-notes: Pre-notification can be sent to validate account information before the first live payment
Wire Transfers
Wire transfers are high-value, time-critical payments that settle in real-time. JPMorgan Access supports both domestic (Fedwire) and international (SWIFT) wire transfers. Wires are typically used for large transactions, real estate closings, treasury settlements, and other urgent payments.
Domestic Wire (Fedwire)
- Real-time gross settlement via the Federal Reserve
- Same-business-day finality
- Requires beneficiary name, account number, and routing number
- Beneficiary bank identified by ABA routing number
International Wire (SWIFT)
- SWIFT network for cross-border payments
- Requires beneficiary name, account number (IBAN for many countries), and SWIFT BIC
- Supports currency conversion at competitive FX rates
- Tracking available via SWIFT GPI
Wire Cut-off Times
Wire transfers have cut-off times that vary by currency, destination, and payment type. Payments submitted after the cut-off are processed the next business day. Cut-off times are displayed within the JPMorgan Access payment screen and depend on the following factors:
- Beneficiary bank location and time zone
- Currency of the payment
- Whether the payment requires dual approval
- Whether it is a standard or expedited wire
Bank Lookup
JPMorgan Access includes a built-in Bank Lookup tool that simplifies the process of identifying beneficiary banks. Instead of manually entering routing numbers or BIC codes, users can search for banks by name, country, or location. The Bank Lookup tool helps reduce errors and ensures that payments are routed correctly.
Key features of Bank Lookup:
- Search by bank name, city, or country
- Returns routing number (domestic) or SWIFT BIC (international)
- Validates beneficiary bank details before submission
- Reduces risk of misdirected payments
Branch Lookup
For domestic payments where a specific branch is required, JPMorgan Access provides a Branch Lookup tool. This allows users to identify individual bank branches by name or location, ensuring that payments are directed to the correct processing center.
Global ACH
Global ACH extends ACH capabilities to international payments, allowing organizations to make cross-border payments that settle through local clearing systems in the beneficiary's country. This is often more cost-effective than traditional SWIFT wires for lower-value international payments.
| Region | Clearing System | Currency Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Europe | SEPA | EUR |
| United Kingdom | Faster Payments / BACS | GBP |
| Canada | Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) | CAD |
| Australia | BECS | AUD |
| Japan | Zengin | JPY |
Payment Approval Workflow
Both ACH and wire transfers in JPMorgan Access can be subject to dual control. An organization's Access & Security Manager configures approval rules that determine which payments require additional authorization. The typical workflow is:
- Initiate: An authorized user creates the payment
- Review: The payment enters a pending queue for review
- Approve: A designated approver authorizes the payment
- Release: The payment is released for processing at the appropriate cut-off
Payment Status Tracking
After a payment is submitted, JPMorgan Access provides real-time status tracking. Common statuses include:
- Draft — Payment created but not yet submitted
- Pending Approval — Awaiting authorization per dual control rules
- Approved — Payment authorized and queued for release
- Processed — Payment sent to the clearing network
- Settled — Payment confirmed by the beneficiary bank
- Returned — Payment was rejected or returned
Common Issues and Troubleshooting
Payment Rejected
- Verify beneficiary account number and routing/BIC
- Check that the payment amount does not exceed authorized limits
- Ensure the payment type is permitted for the selected account
Missing Cut-off
- Check the cut-off time displayed on the payment screen
- Submit payments before the cut-off to ensure same-day processing
- Consider same-day ACH as an alternative for urgent payments
Incorrect Beneficiary Information
- Use Bank Lookup to verify routing/BIC before submission
- Double-check account numbers against beneficiary records
- Use pre-notes for new beneficiaries to validate account details
